Though it still feels very much like summer, with fireworks in the not-so-distant past, the school year is right around the corner. It’s likely your school district has published a list of supplies needed for the first day, but no matter what school you go to, you’re going to need the following essentials:

Backpack. This is another way to express your individuality, while meeting the practical need of toting books and supplies. Rain jacket or umbrella. We recommend an umbrella since it may be difficult to fit your backpack (and other supplies like instruments) under a raincoat or poncho. Choose one with a retractable handle for easy storage under your chair.

School supply basics. Your school district will require specific supplies based on your grade level, but no matter where you go to school or what grade you’re in you’re going to need plenty of notebook paper, pens and pencils. Have extras on hand at home, as you may go through your first round pretty quickly.

Personal organizer. Help yourself—and your parents—keep track of important dates and projects. An organizer with a calendar helps you keep your assignments, projects and activities under control.

A clean outfit. Make sure your clothing is set out and clean before your first day of school. This will help you sleep better and avoid any unforeseen wardrobe issues.

A note from your parents. If you need to take medication during the school day or have any special medical needs, ask your parents to write a note to your teacher. He or she should already have this information from the principal, but it never hurts to have a reminder.
